Edward Everett
Edward Everett was a politician, a pastor, an educator, a diplomat, and an orator from the state of Massachusetts. Everett, a Whig, served as a U.S. Representative, a U.S. Senator, as well as the 15th Governor of Massachusetts, the Minister to Great Britain, and U.S. Secretary of State. He taught at Harvard University and served as its president. He is most famous for giving a two hour oration for the Dedication of the Military Cemetery at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania shortly before a few remarks given by President Abraham Lincoln.
Everett sent a note to Abraham Lincoln on his Gettysburg Address with this quote:
"I should be glad, if I could flatter myself that I came as near the central idea of the occasion in two hours...
