This is a standing request for help with our Biography Forum!
GentlemanRob has been so kind to spend many, many hours building this forum to it's current state, and we can't thank him enough.
But the Biography forum can always use just a little more help! So what can you do to help build this part of the site?
- Provide Missing Photos, and photos that might add context to the Biographical Profile
- Including: gravesite photos, childhood homes, monument photos, portraits of the subject, or subject's spouse or family, photo of the subject in their environment, photos of documented public relics associated with the subject. Modern Photos should be clear, cropped well, multiple shots are encouraged to get detail and contextual images, and either have been taken by you, or you have documented permission to use them for this project. Any Public Domain photo you discover is welcome as well, as long as you are sure it's not an edited photo by a graphic artist with a copyright.
- Provide Public Domain Newspaper Clippings:
- Anything that was printed before 1917 should be fair game!
- Marriage Announcements
- Obituaries
- When relevant, Unit Monument Dedications, the local newspaper will usually cover those
- Provide an introductory paragraph to the Profile!
- We would like each Biographic Profile to have a One Paragraph introduction. Something that will explain who this person is, and why we are including them, why they are important. If you'd like to contribute that for any profile that doesn't have one, or improve one that's already there, let me know, and I'll help get it posted!
- A Sample intro paragraph: https://civilwartalk.com/threads/longstreet-james.165197/
- Help Create a new Literature Section for each Biography!
- For many of the profiles of well known Generals and Politicians you can find anywhere from a few, to dozens of Biographies about that person. We would like to begin cataloging the best of the best Biographies (in book or e-book format) and making a list of those books below the profile. This may include modern as well as period literature, depending on what we have access to. If you have an interest in this project. Let me know!
- Hunt down hard to find or unusual information!
- Find a Subject's Granted Patent Numbers, Patent Drawings, and/or Application.
- Discover a missing link or new clue using Genealogy research data, or Military Records
- Find out the name of the ship, itinerary, or date a subject travelled / immigrated using a passenger manifest.
This is the perfect project for a person who likes solving puzzles! But you still need to be okay with getting skunked, and moving on to the next puzzle without finding an answer. Sometimes there is just nothing to find!
That's why I still enjoy doing profiles, I try not to get bogged down, but there is a real thrill when you find a good nugget to add to a profile!
