Struck in the face by a bounding enfilading solid shot fired from "Round Top" [either Little Round Top or perhaps McGilvery's artillery line] during the cannonade on July 3. Someone had shouted, "Look out!" and when he raised his head up he was immediately struck. He was first carried to the shade, then transported to the field hospital. Lieutenant Wood wrote: "In Colonel Ellis we lost a good officer - a good man as well as a polished gentleman." (Reminiscences of Big I, by Lt. William Nathaniel Wood, Company A, 19th Virginia)
