I recently purchased a nice Spencer Rifle serial number 23363. I was wondering if anyone would be able to help me on some more specific info on the rifle including what unit it may have been assigned to?
Thanks in advance!

Pictures and what the markings are would help considerably.

cartouches are very faint. Let me know if you're looking for specific markings in specific places.

https://collegehillarsenal.com/US-Model-1860-Spencer-Rifle you will find a write up by Tim Prince of College Hill that shows a fairly close serial number to yours. Only off by a couple hundred. His write ups are always very good. It would have been produced most likely in 1863. The possible cartouche MMJ likely stands for Martin MacNary Johnson, but this is only a guess as unable to see anything in photo. This should give you some info to think about. Vastly distributed to many units both infantry and cavalry
