I have recently been looking at a Sharps Model 1853 slant breech rifle serial number 9445 which probably dates it to 1854. My question is this, it has a tang peep sight fitted and this obscures most of the serial number only showing the 9. However the full number 9445 is also stamped to the side of the tang. Wondering if anybody has ever come across this and if it likely to be period or a later re-stamping. Unfortunately I am not in the position to remove the tang sight or the wood stock to inspect. Any information is greatly appreciated.

Hi all, thank you for the information and picture of patent markings, my model 1855 certainly has them in that position. I have just noted that there is a rifle, serial number 9568, on page 243 of Marcot's book Sharps Firearms the percussion era and this does not have the patent stamp and also the serial number is in two places as with the one I am looking at. However I have seen pictures of sporting rifles with the patent date at the front of the tang as you guys have mentioned. Is it possible that if the rifle was destined for engraving this could have been intentionally omitted?
