Happy Lee - Jackson Day everyone...!

This may be the last official state holiday in Virginia. I suppose it's still technically possible it remains as a holiday but, I won't hold my breath. The Governor of Virginia & his cronies have said they want to remove the official recognition as such.

As stated before, the celebrations in Lexington will continue regardless.

If you are in the area, come join us this afternoon for some great speakers at the symposium (1-5pm). Ya won't be disappointed, & will get to meet several CWT posters while there

Well I'm back home from my trip to the symposium at Lexington. What a great time. I was warmly greeted by all 4 members I met on my trip. This was expertly set up and I learned so much. Next year I will have to see about getting a room so I can be there Saturday too. Hope someone will post pics of the parade today.

Was a pleasure to meet you yesterday. I will definitely post pictures of today's events. I may not be the first to post pics but, will definitely have some taken, & make them available.

@AshleyMel Wish I could've live streamed the symposium. Just wasn't possible. Maybe next year that is something we can look into.

It's not just the governor and cronies, it's the people too. Do you think there would have even been a Jackson-Lee day, or any state confederate holiday or monuments if black Americans would have been allowed to vote?

I do. The Lee-Jackson Day commemoration began in 1889. The 1900 Virginia census showed the population to be 65% white, 35% black. It would have been a landslide.

Your assuming all white Americans would vote for it, or could. Voter suppression in the south included white republicans also.
After reconstruction ended and the democrats took control of the south the Republican Party ceased to exist in the south for about 100 years.

You are assuming all black Virginians would have voted against Lee-Jackson, aren't you? When the controversy over the Lee Monument in NOLA was on several years ago, reputable polls found that some 35% of black Louisianians wanted it to remain.

I doubt Thomas' own family would have supported that since they disowned him.

Without a doubt they would still exist. However, I ask that you take your argument to another thread to discuss such. This thread is about the actual celebration that occurred this weekend.

It was a little sketchy on the way to, in the morning. Was definitely some freezing rain coming down. It was clear for all the ceremony, & parade. Just a little cold. Later on, there was a slight rain but, the drive home was uneventful. The indoor events were well attended. The outdoor events, attendance was down, due to the weather. Lots of folks are fair weather supporters

It was a good event, and I'm happy to have been able to participate in it. Lexington is a beautiful town, with plenty of places to visit. This was my first time there, and I will definitely go see it again.

It is a lovely little town, despite some of its less than savory temporary residents. So much history and heritage in that little town. Also love the mountains and landscape around the town. Beautiful place. I wish I had been able to attend this year. Hoping I can make it next year though.
