Below is a photograph (Source: LOC) of Union Col. (later Bvt. M-G) Benjamin Franklin Kelley that could be added to the list of scary-looking officers. (He reminds me a little of Capt. Ahab in the movie 'Moby Dick').

Don't think so. Both eyes seem to line up in the same direction. (On the nose side of his left eye it's darker and partially obscured from view in the photograph).

I offer John Brown. Not exactly a commissioned officer, but certainly a man who played a part in the war. With usually wild hair and crazy eyes, he strikes me as a very scary man.

He never looked particularly scary to me. But intense, absolutely.

Yes, and in my opinion General Beauregard was underutilized (just because Jeff Davis did not like him personally).

Beauregard had a tendency to be conservative at times, which wasn't always good. I'd have been interested to know what he was capable of in the long term.
