General Lee's staff

Good evening everyone. I'm new here, but I believe that I do have some civil war roots that might extend to An individual on either General Lee's staff or closely associated with it. I believe his last name is Painter(Paynter). Oral family history has him with Lee either during the Gettysburg campaign or shortly before. First name is Samuel. Don't have a regiment or any other details. Anybody have any ideas of where to look? Thanks much

Welcome to CivilWarTalk.

I found only one service record for a Samuel Painter from Virginia on fold3.
I hope it helps your research.

Thank you So much. Does this mean that he probably did participate in Picketts charge under Garnett's division?

I don't think so, but we have many Gettysburg experts within CivilWarTalk that can offer much more info than I can.

Here is Garnett's Order of Battle at Gettysburg:

Garnett's Brigade, Brigadier General Richard B. Garnett

8th Virginia, Colonel Eppa Hutton
18th Virginia, Lieutenant Colonel H.A. Carrington
19th Virginia, Colonel Henry Gantt
28th Virginia, Colonel R.C. Allen
56th Virginia, Colonel W.D. Stuart

You can't ever be sure, Amanda. That his unit was involved is a good indication, but he might have been detached to guard the wagons. Unless he was killed in the charge. Gots to know some more to be sure.

The 33rd Virginia was one of the five regiments of the Stonewall Brigade led by Brigadier General James A. Walker and was part of Major General Edward Johnson's Division of the Second (Ewell's) Corps. At Gettysburg the regiment, commanded at the time by Captain Jacob Golladay, took part in the heavy fighting on Culp's Hill during which it suffered nearly 25% casualties of the 236 men it carried into the battle.

Thank you SO much. This piece of information is a great start to helping me with my research.
Respectfully,

Very interesting. Most of the 33rd VA were from the counties of Page, Rockingham in the upper Shenandoah Valley. I know that there are a great deal of "Painters" in Page County. One of my co-workers wife's maiden name is "Painter". She may be of relation to Samuel and from Page County, in Luray, Va. Thx for posting!

Actually, I don't think this is the right person unfortunetly. It looks more like the person that I am looking at was actually Samuel Oliver Painter who was in the 25th NC Infantry regiment. This particular regiment was present at Antietam, Malvern Hill, Fredericksburg, Plymouth, Drewry's Bluff, Petersburg(present at the Crater), and Appomattox Campaign. Soldiers in unit came from Henderson, Jackson, Haywood, Cherokee, Tranyslvania, Macon, Buncombe and Clay counties in the western part of NC. Again, thanks for the help.

Here is the roster of the 25th NC. There is no Samuel Oliver Painter, but there are 2 others, both in company B. J.T. Painter and O. Painter. Could it be O. Painter? Apparently he was discharged on July 1861 according to this. This regiment mustered in on August 1861, so according to this he did not even muster in.

It is O. Painter sorry. Let me see if I can do more digging on this. I also have one other hit tonight and that was this. My ggg gradfather, Nathaniel Middleton, according to family legend and the family bible, was KIA in the Battle of Chickamauga. 29th NC Infantry

It's now more than family legend.
Here are his records.

He also made the Roll of Honor in his regiment.
That was reserved for the men that showed extreme heroism in battle.
