I don't believe this is a relative but thanks very much Andy. It looks like most of the descendents came from the regiments mustered out of western NC, particularly the 29th NC Infantry.

Good evening everyone. I'm new here, but I believe that I do have some civil war roots that might extend to An individual on either General Lee's staff or closely associated with it. I believe his last name is Painter(Paynter). Oral family history has him with Lee either during the Gettysburg campaign or shortly before. First name is Samuel. Don't have a regiment or any other details. Anybody have any ideas of where to look? Thanks much

Painter... The surname doesn't show up in the rosters of anyone known to have served on Gen Lee's staff or any other general staff... Possible the individual may have served in some other collateral department level at some point that might have had some association or duty with the ANV... or possibly further down within a regimental structure..... hence the family pass down stories get crossed... all too frequent natural habit...
