Chicken and Dumplings

CB definitely has solid chicken and dumplings for a restaurant. If you want better plate presentation maybe go somewhere with a wine list. Cracker Barrel is about cheap comfort food with old school country ambiance.

Right- what more can you do to enhance the aesthetics of c&d? They are what they are.

And Cracker Barrel is exactly the way it was intended- whether appealing, or not.
I've made chicken and dumplings with dark meat and it was even better than just white meat. You are right it's just chicken and dumplings, nothing else….

When we lived in Macon in the 1950's the S&S Cafeteria was already there. We ate there about once a month!
We ate at the one in Augusta mostly. My grandmother was a Walden. Her brothers ran a men's clothing store in downtown Macon in the 50's and 60's. Her nephews were Phil and Allan Walden, managers of the Almand Brothers Band and Lynard Skynard.

Really cool. I didn't know the Waldens, but a first cousin of the members of the Allman Brothers Band was a good friend of mine. His name was Marty Allman.

This seems to be one of those foods that there are a thousand different variations- included items, texture of dumplings, consistency of broth, etc.

Very difficult, for me, to find a restaurant that does it "right". But like most here, I had a grandma who absolutely had it down pat.

Unfortunately my Grandma that could cook died early on me in 91 and my other never lifted a pan passed in 14 . I still loved her to bits and we were best friends at the end but I never had any strong traditional cooks in the family. I must try chicken and dumplings , I bought an American test kitchen cookbook last year that is huge and there has to be a recipe in it.

In my case- the worst thing is I had little to no appreciation, at the time. At age nine, I was too hung up on fast-food hamburgers.

And then, suddenly, she's gone. Fifty years later, I'm still trying to retain the essence of her cooking.

I'm lucky. My mother came from a family of good cooks, and my wife learned a lot from her. My wife definitely qualifies as a good cook!
