I have a question regarding a Burnside Carbine that I have been given. I know it was purchased in Dutchess County NY, the serial # is 5707, on the but-stock it has what appears to have been a C or a crescent moon, with a small arrow pointing up and a small U directly under the arrow. then there is a large W., next to that there is a B 3 K, any ideas anyone?

We have a winner!

Your carbine is an exact match to a serial number reported in an ordnance return. Twice actually, in 1864 and 65.

5707 - - 64 - CO A LOUDOUN COUNTY RANGERS -
5707 - - 65 - CO A LOUDOUN COUNTY RANGERS -

Loudoun County Rangers

Hopefully, this will give you a good start in researching possible connections to the markings you mention.
Rob,
I have a Burnside serial #19487 with the 1856 patent date 5th model. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Rob 63,
I have a Burnside with a patent date of 1856 and a serial # 19587. It's a 5th model. Any information would be helpful.
Thanks.

Could we see a picture of it? Not to question your statements at all. I would really like to see this piece!

I will take some pics in the morning, and post them, I would love to get more info on it, I need to see if there are any info on who it was issued to,

I recently encountered a Burnside carbine 1862 with a serial # 5119. I wondered if it might appear on any of your lists. Thanks.

You Sir are the MAN! thank you so much! so does that mean it was handed back in or issued out?
No, the 2 different entries only indicate that it showed up in 2 different reports, not that it was handed back in and reissued. (Not that that couldn't have been the case, it just wasn't necessarily the case.)
