2022 Fall Muster Side Trips Thread

I'm coming in Wednesday night, so I am free to do both Thursday and Friday morning side trips. I don't know if there is a choice at this point, but wherever the group goes, I will follow...

A couple days ago, @Kathy the history sleuth asked me in the Muster PM to post an itinerary for the Thursday side-trip and I haven't had time to respond. Let me preface by reiterating that as the Captain used to say when the seatbelt light went off "You are free to move about the cabin."

Lemme also preface it by saying that I treat all these CW road trips like it might be the last time I go, so I make the most of the time I have. I roll early and stay late. Not everyone rolls that way though. I get that.

Lotta folks want to go to the SCV Museum and visit Gen. Forrest's gravesite in Columbia. It opens at 9am and that sounds like a great group activity. It's a 45-50 minute drive to Columbia from Murfreesboro. Sunrise is around 7am. Some other folks who haven't been have also expressed interest in visiting Sam Watkins'gravesite at Zion Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Columbia. It's 10-15 minutes from the SCV Museum.

Morning: Columbia, TN

1. Depart the hotel at 7am for Zion Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Columbia.

2. 9am: SCV Museum and grounds. Those who don't want to get up early and go to Zion Presbyterian Church Cemetery can leave later and arrive later in Columbia.

3. Rose Hill Cemetery in Columbia. No specific arrival time. Confederate monument and burial section there. Many other Confederate veterans scattered throughout the Cemetery including a General killed at Franklin. The wartime owner of Rippavilla and many of his family members are buried there. Right next to it is Rosemount Cemetery. There are at least 2 USCT veterans buried there that I know of.

Afternoon: Spring Hill. Just north of Columbia.

1. Rippavilla. I put Rippavilla first because it is open from 9am - 5pm, but the last house tour starts at 4pm. There are fees for the various house tours. Not sure how many folks want to do a house tour. The old family cemetery is on the grounds too. Right next to the house is some preserved acreage with some interpretive markers and a nice view towards the Columbia Turnpike. I will add here that the BOFT offers a 90 minute guided Spring Hill Battlefield Tour at $25/person that starts at 11am for those that might be interested in that instead of Rose Hill Cemetery in the late morning that day.

2. Spring Hill Cemetery. Open dawn to dusk.

3. Spring Hill Battlefield. Open dawn to dusk. Up on top of the long slope there is a nice place to be at sunset too when the weather is clear. Same for the preserved acreage next to Rippavilla. Both face west. Sunset is 6:24pm that day.

I would add that the SCV Museum and Rippavilla are also good options if we experience inclement weather that day.

For those keeping count, I am in. I would also be more interested in a group going to the Spring Hill Battlefield. Either way this sounds like a lot of fun.

Everything I put on the itinerary for Spring Hill is easily doable in one afternoon.

I am suggesting lunch on the fly on Thursday. I'm sure there's a burger joint, chicken shack or Subway etc. in Columbia to get rations before the march to Spring Hill. I might even brown bag it.

I don't know if my arbnb has a fridge. If we are in a hurry maybe we could stop at a sub place. I like Jimmy Johns. I don't know what they have in TN . We would have facilities available while waiting for our orders and could then get going without alot of delay.

At Rose Hill Cemetery, we will be a few blocks east of Hwy 31 which we will be taking north to Spring Hill. I believe there are several eateries closeby on our trail north.

So far, I have 11 people down for Friday morning at the NBF Boyhood Home in Chapel Hill.

You have posted the schedule, maybe post a list of those "signed up", so we know we are on the list. Just a thought.

Just a reminder that I am leading a couple of alternate field trips. Thursday will also be Forrest focused and centered on touring the sites of his rear guard action covering Hood's retreat after the Battle of Nashville fiasco, with a couple of bonus features. Friday we will visit Hoover's Gap and Liberty Gap, sites of two federal breakthroughs that led to Bragg's abandonment of Middle Tennessee.

Details in the Muster PM.
