OK Folks, here the tread for all side trips during the upcoming Fall Muster at Stones River/Franklin Oct. 7-9 2022. Keep in mind the Official Muster starts at 12:00 Noon on the 7th and will run well into the afternoon of the 9th. Please use this tread for all side trip talk. Looking forward to seeing everyone in Oct.

Spring Hill and Nashville are both 40ish minutes from Murfreesboro. Columbia is slightly under an hour from Murfreesboro.
Is that with or without traffic.:banghead:

When you say Columbia are you including Sam Watkin's grave, S.C.V Museum and NBF boyhood home at Chapel Hill ?
Yessir. And Rose Hill Cemetery in Columbia.

ETA: And St. John's Episcopal Church and Graveyard.

I'm ready for a Nashville visit, count me out on Columbia. As much as I'd love to go by Chapel Hill, I'll probably have to bow out on that as well. Though Tom may wish to come along on those two latter places.

Time and everything else permitting I'll probably see about stopping Shiloh on the way up there. Full disclosure on my timing, I hope to see a certain plantation on the way in the Memphis vicinity.

Not suggesting necessarily as a group side trip, but some members who seldom are in region might enjoy Loretta Lynn's at Hurricane Mills, if they have time.

It's rather a treasure trove of country music history and the icon.

I was out there when it was closed in the evening in 2018. They leave the gates open. You could see the home from the road. Anyone really interested would want to go when it was open. They have a schedule of events and concerts.

I would do Columbia too.

If you planned to come into town early or stay late. Places like Fort Donelson or Chattanooga are within driving distance to take a day trip. Hartsville where the Battle of Hartsville took place is an hour or so north from Murfreesboro and has a nice driving tour (https://www.hartsvilletrousdale.com/battleofhartsville).

As I stated, if I make it down, I plan to see the Hermitage since I'm a big fan of visiting presidential gravesites and homes.

If you planned to venture into Nashville, Fort Negley, the Battle of Nashville Monument and Shy's Hill come to mind as they lay in almost a straight line from north to south on the south side of downtown. Nashville National Cemetery also features many Civil War graves.

And it's very haunted too! Throwing one out there for the Haunted Forum! Even Loretta Lynn thinks it is haunted.

Fort Donelson sounds great to me! They were working on refurbishing the visitor's center when I stopped by in 2020, (best place for a safe haven from rioters:D!), and it ought to be done by now. The NPS staff there were some of the best I ever encountered.

I've only seen it in the summer, which don't feel right. Fall ain't winter, but its close enough.

As for Hartsville, I'm not familiar with it. In Nashville, Shy's Hill and the Capitol Museum are my main interests.

I would be interested in Fort Donelson. I'm going to Chattanooga on my own this spring.

Shiloh Side Trip - Thursday, October 6, 2022

I am more than willing to pass through Shiloh National Military Park on my way to the Stones River Muster this coming October and share many of the historic sights of this beautiful battlefield. I am not a tour guide or expert about this park just an old man who has been blessed to visit Shiloh since 1960.

We could meet at the Shiloh Visitor's Center at 10 am. I would insist we eat lunch at Hagy's Catfish Hotel and finish out tour of the National Military Park about 3 pm and then proceed to the Hampton Inn Murfreesboro about a 3 hour drive away.

We can wait and see if any travelers wish to join up for a brief tour of Shiloh. Hopefully @16thAL and @MS2623 can join as they really know the park far better than I. Look forward to hearing from others interested in this possible side trip
Regards
David

I was at Donelson in the Fall of 2020. The museum was cordoned off for construction (not that anyone could go in due to COVID anyways had it been open). I would certainly think it would be done and open by now.

Hartsville isn't a widely known engagement but it led to John Hunt Morgan's promotion to brigadier general. A few original structures remain along with a cemetery that features graves as result of the battle. There are also various monuments and markers around the area. Here is a list: https://www.hmdb.org/m.asp?m=180263
