2022 Fall Muster Side Trips Thread

Just had a nice chat with my road dog @Rick Featherston. I ran by him what I think is a highly doable itinerary for Thursday. I had asked him a couple of times over the last few months to be thinking about what he wanted to do on side trips. He more or less left it up to me. We're rolling out very early from his house in Tyler on Wednesday morning and stopping at Parker's Crossroads on the way.

Here's what we talked about for Thursday. Roll out from the Hampton Inn in Murfeesboro about 7am.

1. Sam Watkins' gravesite at Zion Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Columbia. There are other Confederate veterans buried there too.
2. SCV Museum in Columbia. It opens at 9am.
3. Rose Hill Cemetery in Columbia
4. Spring Hill Cemetery
5. Spring Hill Battlefield
6. Rippavilla house in Spring Hill.

Tours at Rippavilla — The Battle of Franklin Trust

Rippavilla is a Greek Revival style mansion built by the Cheairs family in the 1850s. It is located on the Spring Hill battlefield, and was used by Confederate Gen. John Bell Hood on the morning on November 30, 1864.

There might be time to squeeze in a visit at Saint John's Episcopal Church and Graveyard in Columbia if anyone hasn't been and wants to go.

We are leaning towards going to Franklin on Friday morning and at a minimum going to Fort Granger, Rest Haven Cemetery and the City Cemetery. We might go to the Visitor Center at the Carter house.

I am planning to lead an all day trip Thursday to the sites of Forrest's battles during the Nashville retreat. Starting in Columbia. Will go to Fouche Springs, time permitting. If you want to go on this tour we recommend that you read/bring John Scales' book on Forrest's battles and campaigns,

Friday morning is Hoover's Gap and Liberty Gap.

I am arriving early Wednesday evening and staying at the Hampton Inn. And still hitting up the Tex Mex restaurant impersonation Wednesday and most likely Thursday nights,

Change of plans for the Friday morning side trip. We will mostly likely finish our guided tour of Franklin early Sunday afternoon in time to go to Fort Granger, Rest Haven Cemetery and City Cemetery.

Many have expressed interest in visiting the Nathan Bedford Forrest Boyhood Home in Chapel Hill, TN. Google says the NBF Boyhood Home opens at 8am. The phone number they show for it is a Nashville number that doesn't work. I called SCV HQ in Columbia this morning to try to get a good phone number and/or hours of operation of the NBF Boyhood Home. Waiting for a call back. As I understand it, it is owned and/or managed by the SCV. I think there's plenty of time for an hour/hour-and-a-half visit to the NBF Boyhood Home on Friday morning and make it back to Murfreesboro in time for the Muster kickoff at noon.

If the NBF Boyhood Home is open at 8am, I intend to leave Murfreesboro at 7am Friday, be there when the home opens and be back in Murfreesboro in time for an 11am lunch at the Kleer-Vu Lunchroom.

I probably won't be able to stick around long enough on Sunday to see the cemeteries, because I am flying home. But I think NBF boyhood home is a don't miss. Thanks. I will bookmark the cemeteries for the next trip to Franklin. It's about 6 hours from my kids so I'm sure I will get there again.

We are ON for Friday morning at the NBF Boyhood Home in Chapel Hill at 8am. We could meet there earlier if the group would like. I just got off the phone with the Caretaker of the home. It is owned and operated by the SCV and there's a $5 entry fee person. He didn't ask for a head count and said he didn't need one but I told him I'd get back with him anyway and our visit would probably be at 8am. I told him we had were basing out of Murfreesboro and had to be back by noon. He's looking forward to our visit. I believe it will be a guided tour. Is 8am okay with everyone? Who's all going?

Yes. A group is going to Columbia on Thursday morning and Spring Hill in the afternoon. There should be plenty of time for Rippavilla. Of course, anyone is free to go other places if they have other plans.

A group of us are going Thursday morning. The SCV Museum opens at 9am. Some of us are probably going to visit Sam Watkins' gravesite at Zion Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Columbia around 8am first.

Am leaning towards going to the two morning trips, depending on what I decide I might drive Thurs to break away after SCV.

Can't decide between Rippaville and Spring Hill or Andrew Jackson's Hermitige and Polk home/museum in Columbia. Both Jackson and Polk make most short lists to most influential presidents.
