I think John Wayne's version came out around 1960. I saw it then when I was a teenager and really enjoyed it. I was given a DVD of the movie a few years ago as a Christmas gift and enjoyed it just as much as I did in 1960.

Since we had been at peace with Mexico for about 112 years by the time the movie was released I don't think I would buy onto the propaganda thing too much, but that's just an opinion.

@Polloco Both JW's Alamo and Green Berets are my guilty pleasures. Both are propaganda but I enjoy them anyway.

@Cavalier You will not be disappointed with the '04 one! I was born 42 years after JW's so I envy that you got to see it on the big screen!

"The Last Command" (1955)... With Sterling Hayden as Jim Bowie and Arthur Hunnicutt as David Crockett...

That same year Disney aired the "Legend of Davy Crockett" with its conclusion at the Alamo. Here's a recording of an LP record based on the audio of the Alamo episode... narrated by Buddy Ebsen (who played Davy's fictional sidekick Georgie in the series).

Also enjoy Wayne's "The Alamo" ("The Waynamo") and Disney's "The Alamo" ("The Disneymo").

I hadn't seen this one mentioned on this particular thread yet. I would include this one in the bizzare kinda crazy catagory. The ending of the movie is way out there. It's described as a pyscological thriller. Its not bad, but its not great either. I guess Scott Eastwood's attempt to break into the western scene like his Dad. It has some notable actors. The movie end will have you scratching your head….

I actually prefer the 2004 version of the Alamo over John Wayne's film. Asides from the inaccuracies, John Wayne was not the right actor to play Davy Crockett. Crockett was no 6'4" hulk of a man. He was, like most Texicans,quite "average".

John Wayne planned at the time of the making of "The Alamo" to play himself Sam Houston and wanted possibly Charlton Heston or at least Richard Boone (Houston in the film...) to play Davy Crockett.

There are those who say that John Wayne's version of the Alamo is a propaganda piece much like the "Green Berets". It's still entertaining.

I always try to defend "The Green Berets"...sure it was hated or at least mocked by an important part of Vietnam soldiers , because it's said to be irrealistic and exageratly "patriotic"... but that film is the TOTAL war movie, once you're at war with someone or somewhere you need to have films that encourage the fighting spirit of the soldiers and the civilians at home.

That was John Wayne's idea at the time. An RKO's era inspired film, between "Iwo Jima" and "Objective Burma" ... in fact, I consider "The Green Berets"to be the "Objective Burma" of it's time : a patriotic film, issued during the conflict it depicts, with a clear intention to support the morale of the troops and the people at home.

Anyway, my favourite VW film remains "Platoon"...but it couldn't have been issued in 1968...

The Outlaw Josey Wales is my favorite movie of all time. It was a great movie that represented the rural confederate soldier! And it didn't shy away from the bad on both sides during the war

He was in a lot of episodes of Gun smoke. He usually played a bad guy but had a few roles where he played the good guy
