I hadn't seen this one mentioned on this particular thread yet. I would include this one in the bizzare kinda crazy catagory. The ending of the movie is way out there. It's described as a pyscological thriller. Its not bad, but its not great either. I guess Scott Eastwood's attempt to break into the western scene like his Dad. It has some notable actors. The movie end will have you scratching your head….

Just rewatched The Homesman (2014), directed by Tommy Lee Jones and starring him and Hillary Swank (with a whole bunch of well-known actors in support though those 2 carry the thing). Dealing with women's lives and mental illnesses, both rarely the center of a western plot, I find it one the most uncomfortable anti-westerns I know. It has some very rough short scenes adding to that and is less scenic than it could be despite being well made. The rarity makes it really interesting though and it is definitely worth a watch.

I always try to defend "The Green Berets"...sure it was hated or at least mocked by an important part of Vietnam soldiers , because it's said to be irrealistic and exageratly "patriotic"... but that film is the TOTAL war movie, once you're at war with someone or somewhere you need to have films that encourage the fighting spirit of the soldiers and the civilians at home.

That was John Wayne's idea at the time. An RKO's era inspired film, between "Iwo Jima" and "Objective Burma" ... in fact, I consider "The Green Berets"to be the "Objective Burma" of it's time : a patriotic film, issued during the conflict it depicts, with a clear intention to support the morale of the troops and the people at home.

Anyway, my favourite VW film remains "Platoon"...but it couldn't have been issued in 1968...

My favorite VW was Siege of Firebase Gloria just because of Lee Ermey

Never get tired of his narrating events/thoughts during parts of movie.

RIP Wings Hauser, a.k.a. "Dinardo" in FBG...

He also was in "First to Fight" (1967) with the late Gene Hackman...

Mr. Hackman did lots of westerns, but Hauser only a couple episodes of "The Young Riders" and "Walker Texas Ranger." His son Cole, however, starred in the popular western show "Yellowstone."

Some of Hackman's westerns included... "The Hunting Party," "Geronimo: An American Legend," "Unforgiven," "Quick and the Dead," "Zandy's Bride" and "Bite the Bullet."

R. Lee Ermey did a few westerns in his time too. "Jericho," "You Know My Name," and on TV the "Adventures of Brisco County, Jr."

Very cool find! Sounds like you had a nice time. It must be cool to just pop over into Italy for the day! (Us Texans have a 6 hour drive in all directions if we want to leave the state. )

I wanted to start a big ol' thread for all Western fans, to talk about movies, TV shows, video games, etc. (This is CW-related, since the majority of Westerns involve it in some way.)

I'll start by listing my favorite Western movies, and why.

The 2007 remake of 3:10 to Yuma is probably my favorite Western. I'm a big fan of the orignial, but this one blew my mind. It's not only exhilirating, but emotionally effective and surprising. The original goes on my favorite list too.

The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance is literally perfect, and it can only be justified by a viewing.

The Good the Bad and the Ugly is the only Leone film I like. I was never crazy about his lengthy art-farts.

Unforgiven is still a masterpiece, one of the most authentic period pieces ever made.

The Gunfighter is a good obscure, black-and-white one, where Gregory Peck plays an aging gunfighter trying to reunite with his wife. Unforgiven but less sad, but still sad.

The Searchers needs no introduction.

Nor Lonesome Dove.

The Ox-Bow Incident screws with the mind!

Nevada Smith is a forgotten vehicle, very long but effective. Probably the only thing by Henry Hathaway I consider masterful.

"Rio Conchos" Richard Boone at his best with the bonus of an appearance by Edmund O'Brien (a very under rated actor)
" Duel at Diablo" James Garner, Dennis Weaver and Sidney Poitier- sheer bliss!
"Apache" Burt Lancaster gives a moving performance."
"Shane" Alan Ladd's masterpiece ( but both Jack Palance and Van Heflin were excellent as well)
"Westworld" yes seriously! There isn't a person on this planet who wouldn't wish to spend a week at the Delos resort (until the robots got out of hand!!) The TV series was an intellectual mind bender- stick with Yul Brynner and the film(movie).

I agree the theme was indeed a product of the time. The impression that haunts me is Dennis Weaver's screams as the Apache apply some torture- very unsettling. Similar to "Ulzana's Raid" and the opening sequence of "Major Dundee"

The first season of the series was absolutely awesome television. IMO quickly declined afterwards though.

I think you would have enjoyed Texas had you decided to make a stop there. Very hospitable people we have here. Make sure to stop by on your next trip! I also have a lot of respect for Hood's Texas Brigade. You don't usually hear too much about the Civil War in Texas, and Hood's brigade was the only brigade to fight in the Eastern theater, which I think is pretty cool.

I've been to the Alamo a couple of times, but I've never been in the basement. Next time I go I'll make sure to ask.

I recently finished Quigley Down Under, and found out it is set in the 1860s! Even though he's using a Sharps 1874, the rest of the weapons are Colt Dragoons, 1860 Army revolver, 1858 Remington, etc., all period appropriate. Contrary to the excerpt below, I'd say the Sharps is the only anachronism.
