One of the more unusual weapons used by the Confederacy was the Ranins grenade made at the Augusta Arsenal 1864-1865. The Augusta Arsenal produced 8550 of these grenades. Over twice as many Ketchhum grenades made in the North. The use of the grenade during the Civil War was slanted towards the defense so some believe the Confederacy made better use of their limited number grenades than did the North. When I look at the Ranins grenade it looks a bit like a Russian grenade with a tail.

I have earned an expert rating at throwing US grenades, best score of the week for example. I have thrown copies of European and Russian grenades as well and perform well with these. I have ran military grenade ranges. I just do not see how the fins on the Rains grenade would help what so ever. Has any forum members used the Rains grenades and can explain how the fins helped stabilize them?

I am force to using a smart phone for another day and loading photos on my smart phone mystifies me. Perhaps some one can help me.
