Hello ,All! I,m a new member and pleased to join you.
Does anyone know what's going on with usmartialarmscollector/springfieldresearchservice? I subscribed in March '15, rec'd the current newsletter. I then sent the editor a s/n request via email in April, and the same request via snail-mail in July. Have had no response, no furthur newsletters. Also, the website has been intermittently been flagged as having malware.
I have an 1860 Henry rifle s/n 34xx, unfortuneatley, the butt stock is from a different, but closely numbered Henry. I am trying to find out if this "rebuilding" may have been done by Ordnance prior to being re-issued. My research has led me this far, but documentation is, I think, the next step.
Also, the rifle appears to have been converted to a centerfire at some point.
Any thoughts on this and how to furthur proceed would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Those (Henry repeating rifles) were normally privately purchased. However, from surviving records in the National Archives in Washington , D.C. , it is believed that Henry rifles in the serial range from 1392 to 3956 were in the Ordnance Department order for Henry rifles, dated December 30, 1863. Many rifles in this serial range are recorded as issued to the 1st Washington, D. C. Cavalry and after use with this unit were turned back in to the Ordnance department. These rifles were then re-issued to the 3rd U.S. Veterans Volunteers, where they were in service (again) until the end of the war. Hence, based on your different serial number between the stock and the barrel, it could well be assumed that the re-stocking was done prior to the re-issue to the 3rd US Vols. Or it could have been done prior to re-issue for use during the post-bellum Indian Wars where the Henry also saw service for the US Army.

The records on repairs performed by Ordnance and when they were reissued are not specific to the exact serial number as far as I know.

Thank you, Craig. My research so far leads me to the same conclusion as to this rifles travels. Although I have seen Springfield research letters presented with Henrys in auction catalogs with Ordnance and roster records referenced. The problem now is contacting usmartialarmscollector/springfielresearch.
I am certainly willing to pay a reasonable fee for the info. ATW
