Next CWT tour

I am currently planning on taking one of my two weeks of paid vacation that I currently have to go on a weeklong battlefield tour during last week of April of first week of May. However, haven't decided which one I'm going to do.

So whatever we decide on, I'll hold off visiting that particular one until the group trip and seeing a different one.

did they do anything in Virginia :bounce:

Seems the lines for the most didn't move much:D

Well, if you ask one Mississippian history teacher I was told about, Union armies only invaded Virginia during 1861 and then after that, Lee and his Army of Northern Virginia spent the next couple of years fightin in Maryland and Pennsylvania, winning every battle including Gettysburg and forced Lincoln to give the South generous terms that allowed the South back into the Union with all it's dignity intact and that's why the South has so many state flags that have incorporated the Confederate flag as a means of showing the favorable victorious outcome of the war for the South.

Agreed. That's why I suggested Franklin/Spring Hill. Easy to do, easy to get around, good hotels, airport really close (well, it is to us, because it takes about 3 hours to get to the one we can afford to fly out of) and easy to navigate. Add on like we did this year, maybe the Boyhood Home or Columbia...and you'd have a full weekend. I have no knowledge of the other places I'd like to go, so I'll leave that to local experts or people who do them all the time.

Could also visit Sam Watkins grave.

A logical place to start would be with the principal or major battles and campaigns of the war; interesting though they may be to those of us who have been there, had ancestors who fought there, etc., places like Pea Ridge, Wilson's Creek, Bentonville, Ft. Pulaski, etc., etc. don't really quite "make the cut." As previously noted, we've already been to "biggies" Gettysburg, Vicksburg, and Chickamauga; probably other similar classic battles or events make the most likely subjects: Fort Sumter, Manassas, Shiloh, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, The Wilderness, Atlanta, Petersburg, Appomattox, always keeping in mind the caveats made above by @lelliott19 and @ucvrelics concerning matters of time and space. On a purely personal note, I think either Shiloh/Corinth or Franklin/Spring Hill hold out the best possibilities.
If ppl wanted the majors, Shiloh Corinth would lead Franklin/Spring Hill one would think, or even the battles around Atlanta.

Another problem with the majors, is they are they ones alot have already been too

This speaks volumes to me...

Of course I don't care for the majors too much, especially the battlefields themselves. Too many monuments all over the place and the terrain radically changed most of the time to the point it makes it harder for me to understand the battle. I know Vicksburg there was a couple of times I was asking @ucvrelics "How different is the spot from how it was in the battle?" then eventually "How different is it?" the most dumbfounding spot and answer being along the lines of "Well for starters the redan was over where the Missouri Monument is..."

All the more reason to give lesser known battlefields a go, they tend to be better preserved as they were, not so covered in monuments and modern conveniences to deprive someone an idea of how it looked. Plus a lot of those smaller battles had a lot more consequences to them, or potential ones, than most people think, enough to merit they be visited.

But that's my now confirmed to be crazy self.

If they had just left it like it was it would have washed down to the Miss river in 10 years. Many battlefields had reclamation projects performed by the CCC and others after the war in order to preserve them.

If Shiloh-Corinth is up for consideration, maybe @Ole Miss could give us the logistics of what's available in the area.
I live 86 miles from Shiloh.

My first idea was to look at the area around Pickwick Lake. There is a lodge there but it seems there is a Hampton Inn. I haven't been there in years. The lodge was much like the lodges you see at Tennessee State Parks. Not bad and they have a restaurant that is okay.
I made a quick search and I got this page with a list of places to lodging. It is oh about 12 miles from Shiloh.
Pickwick Lake Options

This needs more research. And most likely early reservations if there are other events going on.

{edited} Well I may be posting this a little late. I'm behind on this thread.

It's never too late to put information out there!

I've stayed at that Hampton Inn two or three times before when visiting Shiloh and Savannah. Its MUCH nicer than any of the places in Savannah! That lodge you mentioned is a State Park. https://tnstateparks.com/parks/inn/pickwick-landing

Like me? LOL...maybe it runs in the family?
Actually, I was referring to a newspaper article that circulated at one of the BOOTH family reunions. There was a story that related a family who had a mysterious guest living in their attic. He never came outside during the day and he walked with a limp.
Could a Booth family be hiding John Wilkes Booth?
