Join Historian Jim Ogden for a tour of sites of Union attacks on the East Tennessee and Virginia Railroad Bridges near present day Bluff City and Watauga. We'll explore other sites that were part of the Union's strategic directive to disrupt the Great Trunk Line Railroad.

The driving tour with stops and short walks will begin in Johnson City on Saturday morning and conclude by early afternoon.

The tour is open to the public but pre-registration will be required as the number of participants is limited. There is no fee.

I have to respectfully disagree as there is no way our group can do all 3 between Friday at 1pm and Sunday at 1pm. We could have spent a week at Vicksburg and other outlying battles. We have member presentation and a lot of discussions. We don't do the tourist tours.

And Gathering of old friends and new Im local so don't really see it as other do that havev never been.. Thank you for the eye opener … can do Columbia to franklin in a day some road time sadly but quick and easy I need to re drive it and hope to this fall

I've been lucky enough to attend three of these CWT gatherings and assisted with another I wasnt able to attend (so Ive been involved in a total of four.)

Gettysburg, Chickamauga, and Vicksburg - what was the other one?

Prairie Grove/Pea Ridge AR/Wilson's Creek MO (Please clarify: there may be consensus that this one should be postponed until after renovations?)

I concur we should make sure the Wilson's Creek work will be finished, otherwise postponem.

I will see what I can do about attending I would love to see more details on this. I live about 3 hrs away I go to Mr. K's in Johnson City a lot. Great selection of Civil War books.

Gettysburg, Chickamauga, and Vicksburg - what was the other one?

Gettysburg twice - Naturally, the first one was at Gettysburg, but the very next year author and member Eric Wittenberg volunteered to conduct a one-day bus tour following Lee's retreat route to the Potomac and THAT became the centerpiece of the second year's event, also based on and in Gettysburg.

Agreed. That's why I suggested Franklin/Spring Hill. Easy to do, easy to get around, good hotels, airport really close (well, it is to us, because it takes about 3 hours to get to the one we can afford to fly out of) and easy to navigate. Add on like we did this year, maybe the Boyhood Home or Columbia...and you'd have a full weekend. I have no knowledge of the other places I'd like to go, so I'll leave that to local experts or people who do them all the time.

A logical place to start would be with the principal or major battles and campaigns of the war; interesting though they may be to those of us who have been there, had ancestors who fought there, etc., places like Pea Ridge, Wilson's Creek, Bentonville, Ft. Pulaski, etc., etc. don't really quite "make the cut." As previously noted, we've already been to "biggies" Gettysburg, Vicksburg, and Chickamauga; probably other similar classic battles or events make the most likely subjects: Fort Sumter, Manassas, Shiloh, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, The Wilderness, Atlanta, Petersburg, Appomattox, always keeping in mind the caveats made above by @lelliott19 and @ucvrelics concerning matters of time and space. On a purely personal note, I think either Shiloh/Corinth or Franklin/Spring Hill hold out the best possibilities.

As an aside, I'll make another observation that until fairly recently, Franklin wasn't "up there" either. I believe most Southerners wanted to forget all about it, one reason that both Franklin and Nashville battlefields were allowed to almost disappear beneath construction and development in the 1960's-1990's period. It's only been since the growth of organizations and movements like the Civil War Battlefield Trust that Franklin has seen a rebirth of interest in its sad history and the memorialization that should have taken place a long time ago.

So glad this discussion has started already as personally coming from the U.K. the earlier we can book, the cheaper our flight will be. (Started saving already) It's easier for us to fly direct into Atlanta so probably leaning towards Franklin or Shiloh, both of which would like to do in more detail, although not ruling out some of the Eastern theatres either.
