North Georgia MIS Get Together

Anytime my dear friends from across the pond come over we have a MIS gathering. Every time I suggested a place @rebel brit would say been there. So it was easier to ask where have you NOT been. So we decided to get of the beaten path and do all the small running battles of North Georgia. Our ranks were smaller this trip as our beloved @Ole Miss and @redbob are wounded and are recuperating and I really hope David gets better soon and Bob should be able to go next trip as he is listed as walking wounded and @NH Civil War Gal couldn't make it down from yankeeland.

Day 1 were started up at Ringgold and worked down to Dalton. I know Gill @Sbc and @Drew took a lot more photos than I did.

I have not been up there since they put the new Gen Cleburne statue up in Ringgold and with the fine details in it, I thought Ken had done it but he did know of the sculptor. It is an awesome statue that was dedicated in 2009.

Our next stops were at a few of the running battles between Ringgold and Dalton.

Our next stop was Dalton and I'll post it later as there was a lot going on there especially at the Confederate cemetery

Could you make out the manufacturer of Gen. Cleburne's sword? At least by style?

I flew into Birmingham and drove myself on backroads into Calhoun, GA for this trip. Always stop when I see a sign that says, "Historical Marker."

What are the odds I found this, completely by accident? The inscription reads, "This marks the place where Gen. N.B. Forrest with 322 men captured Col. A.D. Streight with 1,466 men May 3 1863"

"Erected by Forney District ALA Division United Daughters of the Confederacy June 3 1939."

Keep those pictures coming. I love Ringgold, Dalton, Tunnel Hill and Resaca. Did y'all stop at Rock Springs Church or Peavine Church?

After finding a place for Gill to get a cheeseburger with no cheese we headed into Dalton to the Confederate cemetery. The SCV and UDC are in the process of refurbishing the CS cemetery. It is an awesome cemetery and they are redoing all the graves. There are very few grave markers with names but someone has done a LOT of research and the CS soldiers that are buried there are listed on the monument that was placed there.

I saw all these wooden frames under a huge oak tree next to a marker that the tree has grown up around and realized they were used to reset all the markers. @bdtex needs one of these. They are frames for pouring a new concrete base that also has a flag holder. It was great to see this cemetery being redone.

Been there and it's a great place. I can see where those wooden frames and concrete might be good for smaller stones like the one in your last 2 pictures. Good stuff. Made me go back and look at my pictures from my 2018 visit.

They used to have a statue of Nathan Bedford Forrest in downtown Rome Ga. but it was moved to Myrtle Hill Cemetery. Then later it was moved out of sight.
