There is tons of stuff to see in DC for sure and believe it or not, some of the Union defenses of the city are still preserved and worth the effort to see. You are right though, it would have to be a bus tour, there is no way to keep a car caravan together. It's also prohibitively expensive in terms of lodging and meals for many, if not most.

I will vote for a more manageable option when the ballots are handed out!

I travel to D.C. about 5 times a year sometimes I have never stayed in D.C. for the fact of price it's cheaper to stay out in Springfield and ride the metro. Food is hard to find in D.C. for the most part at a reasonable price.

typical Arkansas closed minded thinking. and I live here!. took 'em forever to decide to let grownups to be able to buy lottery tickets[ as in having a state lottery] oh, also, theres 2 major universities u of a, and, ark state. but do they play each other???? no!! every other state that has 2 or more in state, play ea. other, but oh no not in Arkansas!!

Technically the building isn't the first one, that one got burnt to the ground by I think it was the 15th Kansas Cavalry during the war, though the 1st Indian Home Guard, (US), did thoroughly loot it after the Battle of Cane Hill, (they had to return books to the library they stole and a "electrical instrument"), but the two story wooden college was burnt to the ground and rebuilt after the war, with that rebuilt one being burned down later and the current building built around 1886-1887. The college as an institution was the first, but the buildings didn't survive the war. As another note, there is literally only one building that survived the war, and I think one outside of town in a different direction from the running battle. Almost all the structures are post-war, as the war wasn't kind to the town.

As for the disdain, I've personally been in contact with the organization that preserves and runs it, and they have ZERO interest in focusing on the war. No research, no reenactments, no archeology unless its something else and you stumble on something CW, no Living Histories, no nothing related to the CW. It bleeds over into people around there as well, just look at their FB page and read comments, most recent to come to my mind is a budget flick being filmed and people moaning an groaning about its CW preference.

I live in Arkansas, too, and actually forget Arkansas State has a team. As badly as the Razorbacks are doing right now,it might be for the best if I forget they exist too. o you know why they don't play?? its simply because frank broyles didn't want them too. didn't matter that it might generate thousands of buckeroos,plus maybe a genuine rivalry. but because frank didn't want it[he thought it might hurt recruiting] it didn't/hasn't happened. oh, and you're right, if they played the red wolves would clean their clocks [razorbacks] !

Properly done, it should include Valverde and Glorietta with a brief stop in Santa Fe (it's 15 min from Glorietta).

I like Fredericksburg. It's fairly accessible from Richmond and DC plus highways and you have several battlefields in the area

Wilson's Creek / Pea Ridge / Prairie Grove are high on my To Visit list especially after reading the excellent Shea books on the latter two campaigns. Hitting them in sequence seems like a good plan, but the location may not be so easy for travelers from a distance.

Based on the three past events and the comments in this thread it seems like the best ideas would be either the Rappahannock battlefields ( Fredericksburg / Chancellorsville / Spotsylvania / Wilderness ), Richmond battlefields, or Shiloh/Corinth.

Petersburg, Pamplin Park, and Five Forks could also make for a good event.

it has lot to offer CW and and non local to many sites mad ness in traffic.... but could hit Fort Donelson , Murfreesboro course tn campaign a and few others plenty of homes to see if its your thing I would say out side of Nashville it would be cheaper I live east of it will look at going rates depends what you want to see Shy's hill not really handicap available or fort Negley if I recall correct could be wrong its been a few years lot to two see though some close up some from a distance... Virginia is always nice to visit no matter the time of year so is Charleston South Carolina and Savannah Georgia.

Would be a good time to go for Hugh Freeze, prior moral turpitudes aside. The Razorback's season has been so horrendous, I suspect they could afford to overlook any of that for a creative offensive mind.
