Next CWT tour

Lt. Colonel James N has struck a chord with me. Last year I traveled to Lexington, VA by myself for the Lee-Jackson Day parade and had an amazing time. Had chance encounters and shared meals with random CW authors, sculptors, historians, painters. The ceremony at Jackson's grave was solemn and dignified. The parade thru town was just plain fun! Definitely going again this coming January.

@archieclement the question of whether the Pea Ridge Battlfied has a portion of the "Trail of Tears" is correct or not is beyond my abilities to answer. I have a report cited beow that might answer that question or not so we can let everyone decide for themselves.

David

I think it is actually part of the Cherokee Trail of Tears northern route, its just odd there are markers elsewhere throughout the midwest, including north of the Cherokee removal

James N. is spot on and I would add that having a location where it is self contained is a plus. The war room is a MUST and no matter where we go you have to keep in mind what is best for the majority of the group and that we have members with mobility issues as well. That being said both Shiloh and Murfreesboro are great locations for our group.

LOL...did you get tired of hauling me up hills? Seriously, my knee is a problem, and I'm not the only one with issues. We do need to consider that for CWT get-togethers. On the other hand, a belated thanks to you and every other nice person who steadied me and pushed/pulled. :)

nightlife/shopping wasn't a big consideration in choosing Ringgold as HQ in 2018. Personally,my main focus is the CW sites but I only have one vote like everyone else.

Obviously, my chauffeur likes what I like (or else!) but it's so much fun when everyone brings their significant others--and we tend to have a majority of males, so that probably means shopping. I'm not so sure about nightlife per se, but a good restaurant large enough to hold a good-sized group would be nice. Not sure we can ever match the food in Vicksburg--but I'd like to try!

NO, if you remember I have a few issues in getting around. There several places I didn't climb the steps or hills to see but then I have been there MANY times.

That would cost us,I believe. There is a per person fee for the Carter House,Lotz House and Carnton. Spring Hill,Winstead Hill and Fort Granger are free to the public but I think we would have to pay for guides from the Franklin Preservation Trust. I could be wrong about that.
Maybe we could work on that.

Having flown into the Richmond airport and staying at one of the hotels at the airport and eating dinner closeby,my thought last night was basing out of a hotel near that airport and doing a Cold Harbor,Gaines Mill,North Anna tour. Malvern Hill is close too. Driving on the east side of Richmond and outside the city limits is not too hard as I recall.

We need to pick Martha's brain about the year Hood's Brigade went to Gaines Mill...

@Nathanb1 i understand your problem with your knees as I have had both of mine replaced. Do like do and bring a 15 year old with you to do all your exploring just give him your camera phone😇
I am in favor of any field as I always learn more and really enjoy the company! Besides watching couples fuss, @redbob and @ucvrelics, adds to the enjoyment

Yeah, that makes a difference, for sure. The only other time I was in Vicksburg was on the way to our meet-up in Gettysburg, and I was so sick I really DID crawl up the Wisconsin monument--and totally missed out on the others with steps. (Glad no one had to see THAT). But I do thank you for the help up that hill--I loved the view!

I like Fredericksburg myself. I really would love to be able to make the next one.

I also like the idea of Fredericksburg. The battlefields of Spotslyvania, Wilderness and Chancellorsville are also very close by. They are within about a 20 mile radius! The big problem, as my friend JamesN likes to say - "There's too **** much to see". It would be difficult to know what to include and leave out.
Also possible - The Antietam-Harpers Ferry area - they are very close together.

when will the nominations and vote of members take place? I still think Charleston could be a lot of fun for everyone as it has lots to offer

It will be a while...we have several great ideas floating already. It will be a matter of who's willing to take on the challenge and coordinate, and what can be done in basically a three-day period in an area, plus costs.

I'd center in Franklin, with more in Spring Hill, and have optional tours to Nashville and Stones River--and I think we could ask to see the Forrest Boyhood Home which is nearby. There are a ton of neat entertainment options in Franklin (I might be able to prevail on a friend from high school for some entertainment, too. You might look him up--Lee Roy Parnell).

In Franklin: Carter House, Lotz House, Carnton are great. Tom Cartwright is with the Lotz House now. Carnton takes at least half a day--and the Battlefield Trust has done a nice job surrounding. Winstead Hill is a MUST to figure out the battle. There are also related things, since the battle was in town--the Cotton Gin site, which was saved from that awful Pizza Hut existence...I'm sure @EricAJacobson could fill us in on more since the last time I was there in fall 2017. I never have enough time at the Carter House, and Rippavilla in Spring Hill is good, too. I can see a full Friday-Saturday-Sunday doing Franklin/Spring Hill, with enough side trips to make folks from far away happy...and Nashville is an extremely easy airport to navigate!

LOL, as @luinrina and I discussed, you can even drive past THIS on the Interstate and see for yourself how hideous it is....

Vermont? I still like the idea of the Bahamas or Havana to get an authentic feel for the blockade runners, could spend some time re-enacting shore leave on the beaches with rum and lots of grilled shrimp:D

I'll go for that! @andy Hall can tell us about Captain Dave and the BAAAARRRRGGGE. And don't forget the Confederates who went to Havana after the war...
