If you want to clean it, for cleaning the metal parts that will remove the shellac or whatever was applied onto the weapon, try using a Frontier Big 45 Metal Cleaner pad. It will not harm the metal if used lightly. Then follow up by wiping it down and apply a thin coat of Rennasiance Micro Crystalline wax to protect the metal from moisture, dust buildup and fingerprints. I was gifted a 1842 Austrian musket that had been on display and it had a coat of shellac all over the weapon. It cleaned up very nicely by taking my time to ensure on metall was etched. You can use the wax on the stock to clean and protect it also. The weapon was originally a tubelock and has a Lehman conversion to percussion.
