Lincoln & McClellan

It was at the Grove Farm, which was where McClellan moved his headquarters after the battle, and I do believe it is private property. Its on the Shepherdstown Pike on the west side of Sharpsburg. Many think it was at the Pry House, where his headquarters were during the battle, but that is incorrect.

You can see Mount Airy (aka the Grove Farm) behind the tents in the attached photo taken by Alexander Gardner. The house is an L-shaped structure with the long sides to the northeast and northwest (closest to the road). I am not sure from which direction the photo was taken.

Does anyone know exactly where the photos of Lincoln and McClellan were taken? I want to visit the spot if possible.
I dug out my copy of William Frassanito's book Antietam: The Photographic Legacy of America's Bloodiest Day which includes the photo shown in my post above and a modern photo taken from the same vantage point. By modern it should be noted his book was published in 1978. Frassanito shows the camera to have been positioned between the Sharpsburg Pike (MD Rt. 34) and the Mount Airy farmhouse and facing in a southeasterly direction. Grove Farm is private property so you're not going be able to walk to the site. The driveway into Grove Farm is the first turnoff to the left after the Sharpsburg Pharmacy and Antietam Railroad Station as you drive away from Sharpsburg toward Shepherdstown. Just past the turnoff there is a small (1/2 dozen cars) parking area which would give some view of the area.

Frassanito states the Grove Farm photo was taken at MG Fitz John Porter's Fifth Corps Headquarters. He believes the photo of Lincoln and McClellan in McClellan's headquarters tent was taken at the property of Rev. J. Adams which was located on the Harper's Ferry Road not quite two miles south of Sharpsburg. (See footnote #61 in the book.)

Could these pictures of the 93d NY have been taken at the Rev J Adams property?

Among the pictures taken by Alexander Gardner at Antietnam Oct 4,1862 were 3 pictures of the 93d New York Volunteer Infantry
Two can be found on the Library of Congress website under heading of 93d New York under listings 3c35920/ and 3c35921/
The third is in Volume 1 page 61 of Millers Photographic History of the Civil war

The "T" shaped fence
All pictures show the corner of a field with a rail fence going up from top to bottom on the left and then going left to right....just below the top of the hill where horses are grazing....from above the Fence would look like a "T"
Also the fence post are not on level ground but are goung up a hillside...
