The 60th and the 61st Georgia Infantry were combined in January 1865. But on April 11, 1864 there were 2 companies from the 2nd North Carolina Infantry that transferred to the 60th Georgia. Those 2 companies were made up of Georgia men and became Co E + A. I think Jones was still a major at this time.

I have seen his name written as Walter.
Jones was Major of the 60th Georgia, but in 1865, the 61st Georgia, understrength since the Monocacy, had been merged into the command. Jones was made Colonel (one of the last Colonel appointments in the Army of Northern Virginia as far as I can tell).
