His battalion, the 9th Alabama, had 2 companies added and now had the unit strength to become a CS regiment. It became the regiment known as the 58th Alabama with Jones as it's Colonel.

Checking the O.R.s

Looking at the reports he made during the Atlanta Campaign (Volume 38, Part 3 page. 835, & 841-844) he signs his reports as "Bush. Jones". I take it as he shortens his name to Bush for brevity. If it were just Bush, he wouldn't add the period.
