Johnston had been the Lt. Colonel of the 23rd North Carolina, Iverson's Brigade, at Gettysburg. He was wounded there, one of around 900 men of the brigade to suffer so on the 1st day due to Iverson's incompetence. Due to the disabling and death of other senior officers in the brigade, Johnston was promoted to brigadier September 1st, 1863. He was wounded at Spotsylvania, leading his brigade in another deadly charge to help stem the tide at the Mule Shoe, and returned to command in the later parts of the Valley Campaign. He briefly commanded Pegram's Division after the death of John Pegram at Hatcher's Run, and was wounded for the last time at Fort Stedman.

Father of Medal of Honor recipient Gordon Johnston.
Made me look up this fellow.
Apparently was a Princeton graduate and football player, member of the Rough Riders, fought in the Phillipines (where he got his MOH), and was a staff officer on the 82nd Division of WW1. An impressive record for the son of an impressive Confederate brigadier.

This article attributes the 2nd Bn to Johnston's Brigade. I question the accuracy of that claim.
