Hello everybody, I saw this on Ebay and was wondering if someone here could tell me if it's genuine. It says it's a "Civil War Commissary hat badge". If it is real I presume it's an officer's private-purchase item. What do you all think?

Genuine - Yes,.......... ACW period - No

The Crescent insignia became official for use for Commissary department in about 1873, prior to that it did not have their own distinctive department insignia.

This particular device is a Commissary Sergeants hat insignia that dates to the 1896-1905 era..
