The resignation of his colonels commission in 1855 was due to a dispute he had with Secretary of War Jefferson Davis over sick leave.

When the war did break out and he tried to return to service, He was originally rejected. The intervention of Winfield Scott got him commissioned as a Major General. And this was as advisor to the Secretary of War not a field officer.

He was one of the generals who sat on Gen. Fitz John Porter's court martial.

He was a General, though not a field officer (too old). Hitchcock appears to be the only "civil war general" to come out of his Class of 1817 at West Point.

Hitchcock's mother, Lucy Allen Hitchcock was the daughter of Revolutionary War figure Ethan Allen of Green Mountain Boy and Ft. Ticonderoga fame. No known portraits of Allen exist, but Hitchcock's mother stated he strongly resembled his grandfather.
