Apparently, he was 1st Lt. and later Captain of Walker's 2nd Tennessee Irish Regiment (which later became the 5th Confederate Regiment under J. A. Smith). It seems in the reorganization of the regiment with the 21st Tennessee, he was superfluous and decided to work on staff duty.
