I believe it's been said James R Hagood, when he was promoted to Colonel in 1864, was the youngest Colonel in the Army of Northern Virginia, at around 20 years old.

Possibly a typo maybe? It was stated that he died on his birthday but this biography has him born in November and dying in December.

Probably the fault of the newspaper, maybe they were misinformed of his birthday...or played it up to emphasize his youth

From what I gather he was expecting a commission from the Egyptian army at the time of his death. Plus I think he was in route to a Confederate Reunion when the train wreck occurred.
