A source says He was mustered in as the 8th's Lt. Col. in. August 1861. He commanded the 8th in place of it's Col. William Fenton. The source does not state the year but I'm assuming 1862 as he did command at Antietam. He resigned on September 27th due to ill health. He then again remustered in on May1, 1863 as Colonel of the 8th Michigan Infantry.
