He began his Civil War career as Governor Francis Picken's Council of state. Aside from coastal defenses he was responsible for training state troops.

I think that son,Ernest Albert Garlington, was also a Medal of Honor winner for his participation in Wounded Knee.

Gen. Ernest A. Garlington also received a Medal of Honor during the Indian Wars, and commanded an 1883 relief expedition to rescue arctic explorer Adolphus Greely. Served as Inspector Generl during the SpAm War, and retired a few months after the U.S, entered WWI.
