His son would join the army and join the 7th Cavalry after the Little Big Horn disaster. He also oversaw the Brownsville Riot hearings.
Gen. Ernest A. Garlington also received a Medal of Honor during the Indian Wars, and commanded an 1883 relief expedition to rescue arctic explorer Adolphus Greely. Served as Inspector Generl during the SpAm War, and retired a few months after the U.S, entered WWI.
