His political career ran from 1863 to 1879. On Nov. 20, 1873 he resigned and Governor Caldwell appointed him to the unexpired term of North Carolina Supreme Court Justice Nathaniel Boyden. He refused to run for a second term in 1878 thus ending his political career when the term expired.
