After a reorganization in the spring of 1862 Autry became Lt.. colonel of the 27th Mississippi Regiment. His commission as Brigadier General was signed by Jefferson Davis and it was on it's way to Autry at the time of his death.

His father, Micajah, fought in the War of 1812 as a teenager and was later killed at the Battle of the Alamo in 1836.
