2022 Fall Muster Side Trips Thread

I am planning to lead a Thursday side trip visiting the sites of Forrest's rear guard action during Hood's Retreat. It would be an all day trip. We can work it in by limiting it to Forrest's role, which began in Columbia. Along the way, there are options of brief stops Thompson's Station site, Ferguson Hall in Spring Hill, where Van Dorn was assassinated, the site(s) of the Forrest/Gould encounter in Columbia and maybe even Fouche Springs. All of these sites are in decent pre-war condition

I could also lead visits to Hoover's Gap and Liberty Gap Friday morning.

I will be racing in Alabama on the first 2 weekends in October. I may be able to run somewhere from Oct. 3-6 that's within driving range of Birmingham. I'm racing at Talledega and Barber those weekends.

Don't forget that Fort Defiance is located in Clarksville, TN by Fort Campbell, KY. My old stomping grounds.

If anyone has a chance to head out to Ft. Donelson and Paris Landing, swing into Ft. Defiance.

You will go right past it on your way out Highway 79 to Dover.

"Today I had time to run to Columbia, TN and visit the only remaining home of James K. Polk. Excellent exhibit on Polk, his many slaves, and his refusal to deal with the slavery issue while Speaker of the House and President. He wanted his 1 term to be remembered for how he expanded the area of the U.S. - adding more square miles than any other President. The US 31 corridor from Pulaski to Nashville is an unbelievable collection of historical mid 1800's sites. " I would like to get to the Confederate Museum in Elm Springs too, which is right next door to this. I'll be arriving on Wednesday afternoon. Let me know if anyone else is going down that way.

For what its worth, Fort Heiman is located near Fort Donelson. It isnt much to see and some of it is on private property.

It all sounds good to me.
I would like to see some sites in Nashville if there is anything there. I would like to see where the 17th Mississippi Regiment charged the Union fort — but I think it is the center of a freeway overpass.

Nothing is carved in stone yet that I know of. I am riding with @Rick Featherston this time and we'll probably be arriving early evening on Wednesday. I reckon my itinerary will depend on what others wanna do. With an early start, Columbia on Thursday would be a nice day. I'd love to go there with somebody who has never been. Same goes for Spring Hill.

Due to a lot of circumstances, I'm down to two vacation days. Whether I'll take them Thursday and Friday, or Friday and Monday is up in the air. That may limit me on side trips, if I make it at all.

My buddy @Rick Featherston is attending the Annual Jefferson Civil War Symposium next weekend. The following Monday, we will begin discussing what he might want to do for side trips. It will be time to start having that discussion. There are so many options.
