1860 Spencer questions

I'm new to the site and hoping to get help identifying a couple of Civil War era guns that my Dad owned (will do separate posts on them). He had an 1860 Spencer, Rifle Co. Boston Patt March 1860. The serial # is 50833 or 50633 (have photo) so asking if it might be traceable. The letters "OGP" are stamped in the metal on right side and on the left side of the stock. Would this be an inspector stamp? I searched a couple of Springfield inspector lists, but did not find these initials. My dad said that he bought the Spencer in 1945 from a farm neighbor in southeast Kansas - paid $1.50 for it. One of dad's grandsons would like the gun so I'm trying to collect a little history info and approximate value so the grandson knows what it is and takes good care of it. Thanks for any help.

Welcome from the UK and from The First Bull Run/ Manassas Forum

(I am sure that the relevant experts will be along shortly)

I've never seen inspector's stamps stamped that heavy or that big, they may be the initials of a previous owner.

I wondered if that might be the case and will be looking through the census, local GAR lists and land records to see if I can track down the possible owner/family. Several families/former soldiers came to that part of Kansas after the war for the land grants

Welcome! Thanks for sharing the photos of a great family heirloom! The markings in question, "OGP", look 'recent'. Perhaps a former owner's initials or an armory marking. Are there any markings on the stock?

All I could find on the stock was OGP. I've inspected it a few times to see if I've overlooked anything, but nothing else seems obvious. Will keep looking at it though!

I wanted to do that but the registration has been temporarily disabled for a few weeks. Hopefully, it's back up soon. I did read posts on that forum which has helped a lot.

Thank you! I'm researching the names of men who lived on neighboring farms to my dad's family. Slim chance, but it would be interesting if I find one who served or descended from a 2nd WISC or 7th IND soldier. It just adds more meaning to the story. I'm posting a couple of photos - are these what you mean? I did see an "M" stamp and maybe lettering underneath the bolt, but it's hard to tell for sure.

Or some sort of late 19th century Police department marking.

I would recommend seating the hammer fully onto the tumbler square and then tighten the hammer screw. By being so far out of position on the tumbler square is the reason the side of the firing pin striker has been chipped off.
