Next CWT tour

Perryville, Culpeper (Culpeper is awesome, best place ever, just sayin'... then again, I'm biased:wink:), Sharpsburg, Gettysburg, Atlanta, Chattanooga, Shiloh, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Harpers Ferry, Berkeley Springs (once again, biased), Charleston, I can think of more if you'd like...

Perhaps next year I'll have a drivers license, though I've already promised my arrowhead guys that I'd make it up to Rhode Island. Not too many battlefields in Rhode Island, I guess.
No CW battlefields to see but tons of history in New England to check out while you're there.

Shiloh would be a prefect venue using Corinth as HQ but we have to take into account proximity to an airport for those that have to fly in. A large NMP with a good driving tour is a plus but CWT groups have already done Gettysburg,Chickamauga and Vicksburg.

One could fly into Memphis or Nashville for Shiloh, but as mentioned in a earlier post not sure what nightlife/shopping/dining options are at Corinth, pretty non existent at Shiloh

I always thought DC would be interesting with monuments and museums, Smithsonian and even WH.........but keeping a group together with traffic/parking ect.................
DC is just nuts for driving. It's a beautiful city and I really recommend visiting it but it's impossible for a convoy like we had in Vicksburg.

@Nathanb1 and I mulled over some ideas on Sunday night and two thoughts for the eastern theater we had were
  • Antietam/Harpers Ferry with easy trips to South Mountain and Monocacy, possible extension for those staying longer to Falling Waters, Leesburg, Ball's Bluff, Shenandoah Valley, even Gettysburg
    or
  • Fredericksburg with relatively straight forward trips to Chancellorsville, Wilderness and Spotsylvania. I could even imagine visiting @Reverend Ron 's church at Raccoon Ford. :)
Both, though, would require some driving around. Fredericksburg has the amenities for hotel and dinner, but Antietam doesn't (closest larger hotels in Shephardstown). And Harpers Ferry is more for walking/hiking than driving it.

nightlife/shopping wasn't a big consideration in choosing Ringgold as HQ in 2018. Personally,my main focus is the CW sites but I only have one vote like everyone else.

At vicksburg I enjoyed a few hours at the casino, the dining options, especially the tomato place being so close to the campground, and a visit to the Adolph Rose antique shop recommended by alan I believe, also some bring along significant others who may enjoy some non CW related activities, wouldnt think having some variety would be a negative

Having flown into the Richmond airport and staying at one of the hotels at the airport and eating dinner closeby,my thought last night was basing out of a hotel near that airport and doing a Cold Harbor,Gaines Mill,North Anna tour. Malvern Hill is close too. Driving on the east side of Richmond and outside the city limits is not too hard as I recall.

I'd center in Franklin, with more in Spring Hill, and have optional tours to Nashville and Stones River--and I think we could ask to see the Forrest Boyhood Home which is nearby. There are a ton of neat entertainment options in Franklin (I might be able to prevail on a friend from high school for some entertainment, too. You might look him up--Lee Roy Parnell).

In Franklin: Carter House, Lotz House, Carnton are great. Tom Cartwright is with the Lotz House now. Carnton takes at least half a day--and the Battlefield Trust has done a nice job surrounding. Winstead Hill is a MUST to figure out the battle. There are also related things, since the battle was in town--the Cotton Gin site, which was saved from that awful Pizza Hut existence...I'm sure @EricAJacobson could fill us in on more since the last time I was there in fall 2017. I never have enough time at the Carter House, and Rippavilla in Spring Hill is good, too. I can see a full Friday-Saturday-Sunday doing Franklin/Spring Hill, with enough side trips to make folks from far away happy...and Nashville is an extremely easy airport to navigate!

LOL, as @luinrina and I discussed, you can even drive past THIS on the Interstate and see for yourself how hideous it is....

I can volunteer to lead a day trip of Forrest's rear guard action during Hood's retreat from Nashville.

Good morning folks!
I just now noticed this thread, thanks to lu mentioning the church.
Not having a dog in this fight, I'd like to make a couple of suggestions.

Do two tours East and West / Fall and Spring.
Charter a tour bus or van depending on the size of the group and collect small cash deposits in advance.
People are a lot more likely to commit and show up, once they have some "skin-in-the-game".

I'd love for you all to come visit St. Paul's Episcopal at Raccoon Ford, VA. Fredericksburg, Cedar Mountain, Mine Run, Culpeper, Chancellorsville, and Wilderness are all within 30-40 minutes. Manassas 50-60 minutes.

I'll host a cookout. We can eat, drink, shoot revolvers and muskets. In whatever order : )
Those hard core enough, could camp out there and use it as a base of operations.

However, you Yankees are not allowed to knock a hole in the back wall of the church to bring your horses inside like Custer's Michigan Cavalry did!

Cheers! Reverend Ron

Oh! I forgot Brandy Station is 20 min. away too.

Personally I would have no problem with chipping in for a tour or mini bus for a day if we ever did a heavily urban area, but it would come down to how many others would also be willing

Most considerations have pretty well been discussed already, but I'll add my observations anyway -

Eric Wittenberg's notable objections to what he terms "car snakes" are well made - on this last expedition @mkyzzzrdet got lost in one following the wrong car to Grant's Canal, missed the turn, and wound up in Tallulah! (Last Gettysburg, he & I did the same trying to follow Eric and totally missed the rest of that tour.) Bus tours like the one we made with Eric to follow Lee's retreat route are preferable, but a good deal of trouble to arrange. (The price for approximately 30 of us wasn't bad though.) I think except for a bus tour that should automatically rule out ANY city such as Nashville, D.C., Charleston, Savannah, Richmond, Chicago, etc. with all their traffic.

Although I personally like old houses and personality-themed places such as Illinois' Lincoln sites, Galena and its Grant sites, Lexington's Lee-Jackson places, etc. I think the majority of members here (now that jgooduy, cash, etc. are gone!) feel it was a Civil WAR Between the States and are therefore battlefield-oriented. I've already expressed my feeling that maybe it's time to return to the Eastern Theater of the war, but that's subjective and personally I really don't care. Someplace like Shiloh-Corinth or Franklin-Murfreesboro (avoiding Nashville for the main event) might be the best for convenience and concentration of "attractions". In Tennessee we should have members like @TomP and others who could advise and/or help organize things.

If Shiloh-Corinth is up for consideration, maybe @Ole Miss could give us the logistics of what's available in the area. "Car snakes" would probably suffice but not sure about other things to do in the area.

James N. is spot on and I would add that having a location where it is self contained is a plus. The war room is a MUST and no matter where we go you have to keep in mind what is best for the majority of the group and that we have members with mobility issues as well. That being said both Shiloh and Murfreesboro are great locations for our group.

If we did Nashville, I'd have to fit in the General Jackson........think I've done like 7 different riverboat cruises

Corinth's population is 14,000 with a Hampton Inn, Holiday Inn Express, Econo Lodge and Quality Inn along with a couple of B&B's. Seems like the average price for the better properties is around $110. Restautants include Cracker Barrel, Ruby Tuesday and many local ones such as Smith's and Abe's Grill (both of which I have visited and very good. Hagy's Catfish Hotle is a just above the National Park and is very good!
@TomP would kniow far more than I do about Corinth's night life.

I would like to mention that a little kniown fact about the Pea Ridge national Battlefield is that the "Trail of Tears" crossed through the park and a section of it is still perserved.

I am flexible as to where we should go next year, though I must admit I am intrigued by the idea to base out of Ricmond. Petersburg, Dinwiddie Court House, Saylor's Creek are all near by and Fredricksburg is an hours drive north. For those travelling by car from the west, Appomattox Court House is a ninty minute drive to Richmond.
Regards
David

Sometimes the trail of tears locations seem a bit like the caves Jesse James hid in.........How could they be literally everywhere

I live probably 5 hours today's drive time north of the northern route.......yet there are still markers they camped at this creek or spring here.......perhaps it depends on whether they go by the Cherokee who is generally considered the Trail of Tears, or every possible Indian removal.
