CSN Cutlass question

Hi All,
Has anyone ever seen or heard of a CSN Cutlass with an etched ( period ) blade of any type? In my limited experience, it would seem quite unusual, therefore immediately suspect. However, it also
does not seem to be inconceivable, since there are other sword blades with etchings and even some
custom etching.

I have been collecting Confederate Naval edged weapons for many years and have just about every known variant in my collection. There were no engraved/etched blade models. There is however a spurious example to the CSS Florida that was a product of the House of Swords that is known. It is a total fantasy piece.

Mustang Cdr has a whole lot more of then than I ever will {maybe}, but I haven't seen an authentic etched Naval Cutlass either.

Thank you for your help. This may also be another "House of Swords" product, but a bit less obvious. It was part of a civil war collection having numerous authentic items, but
that is certainly no guarantee.

There are many examples of etched blades in both Army Navy and Marine Corp but 95% are officers. Since the cutlass wasn't an officers weapon IMHO you would be hard pressed to find one.

Thank you ucvrelics. I figured it was a long shot since as you say cutlasses are not officers weapons, but also thought maybe someone wanted it customized. Most likely a repro.

The other 5% not in the equation were cutlass that were purchased, etched and then presented to CS Naval NCO's etc. Which is RARE

The cutlass is a HOS product. The grip scales give it away.They may have etched it as well. Here is a picture of an original.

Thank you for your help. Just to be sure I understand, the grip scales do not look like those found on any of the 4-6 Confederate cutlass makers?

The HOS grips scales are very close to the others but when putting a HOS cutlass next to an original you can readily tell the difference. Also the blade shape is wrong on the HOS cutlass.

It is great to see this posted for comparison. So much closer to the Ames 1841 than the repros. The entire hilt shows the differences.

I have a few random files on ACW cutlasses and leave the appraisals to the tenured scholars of these. I would be personally terrified in bidding at auctions. A yard sale giveaway would be a different thing
