Hi all, I recently picked up this 1840 Light Artillery Sword, picked up on the Gettysburg battlefield in the late 1800s and donated to the then president of the Lutheran Seminary. It was found along with a slouch hat, both with an old turn of the century hand written tag, identifying it to a soldier who was mortally wounded during the artillery barrage preceding Pickett's charge, serving with the Fredericksburg Light Artillery. I believe the hat had his name written on the inside as well.
My question is, I've seen a few of these 1840 swords with the same hilt designs, however those are all Ames made with etched blades. I've not seen any with the same exact hilt designs but totally unmarked, like this one is. Is it just an early import? Any input would be greatl appreciated. Just wanting to better understand what exactly I have here.
