1860-1861 Traveler in Europe? A newspaper article has Lt. Wyman linked with the runaway wife of a Captain John Brannon. The wife, Eliza Brannon, fled to Italy to escape a bad marriage and was soon followed by Wyman who somehow married her in spite of still being married to Brannon.They both returned to the U.S, just after the war started. This was where Wyman was appointed Colonel of the 16th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry after offering his services to Massachusetts' Governor.

Eliza Crane (daughter of Colonel Ichabod Crane) was married to Captain John M. Brannan who would go on to command a division in the Army of the Cumberland during the Tullahoma and Chickamauga Campaigns. After Rosecrans was relieved of command, Brannan became the AotC's chief of artillery.
