During the Mexican-American, Webster became the leader of a faction known as the "Cotton Whigs". Northern Whigs who emphasized good relations with the South over anti-slavery policies. He later lost some of his standing in his home state when the Compromise of 1850 (which Webster helped pass) proved unpopular in much of the North.
