Coonhounds are big here. I have a friend with one. You won't have any trouble finding boarding. Gonna be real hot. We will be having a living history at The Old Courthouse in June, reenactor portraying famous people of the war.

I'll be heading out to Vicksburg early morning Friday, 25 March 2016. I'll be there until sometime Sunday afternoon. I'm making the trip to take some photos for my Website www.civilwaralbum.com. If anyone on this forum would like me to take photos of a particular place please let me know. It will be no problem. My son and I can walk out the woods at the Salient site if necessary. If you want any place photographed it will not be a problem. I'll do my best to get it done. We will be going to the Port Gibson battlefield, a cookout on the Champion Hill battlefield with the owner of the battlefield, the military park and Vicksburg.

Thanks Bruce. I don't know if it is possible, but I would like to see what the bluffs in front of the city look like today; i.e-the classic 1860's view of the city front, but today (across the Yazoo instead of across the Mississippi).

I'm sure this exists, but I have not been able to locate it.

Back in 1997 I was lucky enough to see the old part of Vicksburg from the Yazoo diversion canal. Got a guided tour on a Vicksburg Fire Department rescue boat. The fire chief back then was from a town in Oklahoma just 27 miles from where I was raised. Go to my Website www.civilwaralbum.com and click on Vicksburg Campaign in the left column. After VB Campaign pops up click on Sites in Vicksburg and then Vicksburg's Waterfront. The photos are on page-1. I can rescan the photos and upload larger views. I've got a better scanner now so the quality should be a little better.

The Depot battery was located in the area where the Vicksburg convention center is now. I will take a picture of It and post it.That's not Grant' s headquarters, that's Judge Marshall's house. Grant stayed at the Lum home which was torn down and a battery was built on the site. The Dahlgren cannon on Washington Street, which is located next to where the Washington Hotel stood, and the Whig Office battery was located, came from this battery. Photo of China Street, the Whig office battery was located on this street, and the Washington Hotel was a Confederate hospital. This gives a good idea of the Vicksburg hills. The river is just out of sight of the lower bottom of photograph

Thanks! I think I will too. Have already seen Franklin, Fort Donaldson and Shilo and have Murfreesboro on the list also. I was always an Eastern theatre focused person but now that mom has given me a place to visit that is so close to so many western sites I'm really excited about it.

On a wet, gray day in late December, nearly 300 Americans were killed just north of Vicksburg, and another 1,100-plus were injured.

Today, it is largely forgotten, commemorated only by a single, badly scarred historical marker standing on U.S. Highway 61 Business.

The event was the Civil War's battle of Chickasaw Bayou, a failed attempt by Union forces in late 1862 to capture the Confederate stronghold at Vicksburg, and while there are efforts to remember and preserve the events of the Federal's successful Vicksburg campaign of the summer of 1863, there is little talk or plans for doing the same at Chickasaw Bayou.

"It is an extremely significant battlefield," said Bill Hawke, director of the American Battlefield Protection Program, "and it deserves preservation."

Welcome aboard. I'm with you. My focus has been on the Eastern theater, primarily the Overland Campaign and the siege of Petersburg as that is where my ancestor fought. But now that I have seen virtually every battlefield in the East, plus Shiloh and Chattanooga, I have set my sights on Vicksburg. I will be there in about 3 weeks and can't wait!

I'm going back to Vicksburg in six weeks for the 153rd Battle of Champion Hill Anniversary event. During that time I want to walk out the woods at the Salient Works and visit more sites on Confederate Ave. and Iowa Ave. Didn't get to do that a week ago because of the rain. The old river bridge at Vicksburg is now closed to traffic. I'm wondering if pedestrian traffic is allowed. If it is I could walk out on the bridge and maybe get some shots of the bluffs. The camera I use has a pretty good zoom so maybe I can get some shots of the area you are interested in, below the depot and further south. Can't remember that last time I was on the old bridge. A retired trooper that I used to work with was a truck driver before he went to the highway patrol academy. The old bridge has a very narrow pass for vehicular traffic. Before crossing the bridge he would have to get out of his semi and fold in the left rear view mirror just in case he met another semi on the bridge. Hopefully the bridge is open to pedestrians so I can get what you need. I don't know anyone in the area that has a boat. In a boat I could get some good shots of the bluffs for you. I just lucked out back in 1997. The Vicksburg fire chief back then was born and raised just seven miles north of where I live here in Oklahoma. He took me out on the canal fronting Vicksburg in one of the VFD rescue boats. I should have taken more photos back then.

Chickasaw bluffs are still there,with the exception of the northernmost part. It and some great CS battery sites were graded down. The rest is pretty much the same as it was. Thompson Lake is still there,and the fields where Sherman's troops landed and fought are still being plowed. One of the saving graces of Chickasaw is that it is in a Mississippi River floodplain, and cannot be developed.

In on break. Been in the veggie gardens all afternoon putting seeds and plants in the ground.

OK on the bridge. Never heard of the Over the Run. That's a shame the bridge is pretty well closed with the exception of the railroad. I read somewhere that one or more of the old bridge piers near the east bank are leaning. It might have been the newer bridge, read that a few years ago. Does Vicksburg still runs boat tours. I could get a shot of what is left of the bluffs. I'll check into that in May.
