Taking requests on colorization

Coloring is a peice of cake, Pete you seem well versed in computer searches.. So I would suggest studying layers, in its simpliest form, You just create a layer, choose a color you want to use then color the parts in the picture.. If you want to choose another color for something else choose a different layer.. Think of layers as transparencies laid over the original picture, you can change a transparency without effecting the original. Then the different layer blending modes allow you to change how each layer affects the rest of the picture.. Thats it in its basic form, after you get the hang of that, there so much more you can do ..
Thanks a bunch, Will - I'll be a-knockin' on your door once I take the plunge

I think I could create a form of tutorial. I don't know though. I don't have a program able to record my screen (I have FRAPS for when I play online games and stuff), but other than that I don't have anything. I'm too lazy to write up a detailed text - but - no programs are actually bought. I've illegally torrented Photoshop because who wants to pay like $600 for a program that's free on the internet?

You can buy adobe photoshop elements for like 70 bucks or less for earlier versions and has preety much all the main things that photoshop has..

Still... I'm not endoring Piracy in any way but it's a quick solution if you can't shell out the necessary funds.

Promise to reimburse Microsoft once you become a rich and famous Colorer? say 3 hail Mary's and go with God my son.
If I become famous I will start purchasing products again - because I can. Because I can take it. Because I am the hero Microsoft deserves.

I don't think microsoft will go under because some young un gets a few tools off them.
We never know, they could be watching.

I also like how everyone says Piracy is killing the movie/music/rap/whatever industry, yet I don't know a single person who has gone and watched The Avengers - or intend to without pirating - and it has still, to date, pulled in a whopping $1.4 billion.

But as you were saying I just think piracy is easier, I like having the virtual data there to access when I want, I don't want to go to the cinema and watch a movie once, rewatching's my thing. Sorry for the rant.

Well done my young freind. A good man to represent you as well.
Hopefully one day I can do his actions justice. I've been considering getting drafted for the military in a month when I turn 18, however not for the 'glory' of war, for an experience of how it is.

Lol, unfortunately I'm still very much an amateur, I appreciate the compliment, but there are people much more skilled and adept at this (I'd almost call it an) artform than I am presently.

If you're not watching the 'Colored Images from the Field' thread, this is my latest contribution - Armory in Richmond.

I already fixed the Twain photograph (Both of them http://i.imgur.com/tnaAu.jpg - http://i.imgur.com/j0ohU.jpg), I don't mind revealing my entire process. Do you know how Photoshop works? If you don't then it's a fairly complicated process for a computer illiterate person, no harm intended.

Essentially photoshop adds layers of colored light onto the image. Essentially the reason why images appear brighter and more alive when color is added to them is simply because they're plastered with colored light. The way I do it is judge by eyesight before I start anything and pick out my colors with a notepad file I have stored where color (hex decimals used to identify and find colors) codes are within. So I add 5-6 layers for each image (Usually for Union and Confederates I add one for Skin, Hair, Eyes, Uniform, and Brass objects.), and I assign skin color code to the skin layer (obviously), and then color the designated area, and I ctrl-click the layer (which highlights the color inside the layer and everything else is removed so I can tell if I have areas that I've missed.), I do this for all of them, then I adjust the lightning on the image so it isn't overly bright or overly dark either. Once you get in to it it's a pretty simple process that can take anywhere from 5 minutes to several hours on end.
Well said, and thanks for the information. Beautiful results, must be very self satisfying.

It's nice when an image just ties up perfectly, make no mistake. But what's not nice is being able to see all the flaws I've made, I make mistakes in every single image and I keep finding more and more, so going back and correcting them becomes moot, so I have to live with them every night. They haunt my dreams...

On a more serious note, it's a great hobby. I'm always happy to help, and don't be afraid to drop any b/w images you want colored in here.

I'm currently recording a voiceover in Sony Vegas on 9 minutes of coloring footage for a tutorial on how to color.

Stay tuned boys.
