Hi all, I would like some help identifying this sword worn by General George S. Greene. This photo was taken in 1893. The basket looks smaller than a standard officer's sword. Can anyone help identify it? Thanks!

Is the date 1893 correct? From the small section shown it looks more like 1863, but it is possibly a 1893 photo in which he donned his old uniform for a GAR function or the like. He would have been 92 at the time. The sword does not look like a regulation sword. As a general officer serving in staff or infantry positions, he would have ordinarily worn a M1850 S&F or M1860 S&F sword, or possibly the so-called M1851 general officer's sword. (In the only other photo I have seen of him wearing a sword, it appeared to be a M1860 S&F.) The sword shown in your picture is clearly not one of these. To me it looks like a non-regulation German import, but I can't make out enough detail to be more specific than that. .

Right, the photo is from the 1893 Gettysburg reunion. That's really interesting, Richard. I will see if I can find some more photos. Do you have a link to the photo of him with the 1860 S&F?
Any chance it could be 1850 Foot Officer Sword?
