I picked up this heavy cavalry type sword for a song. It's so messed up that I thought there was no chance it would be a fake. It's got some light pitting on its 37 inch blade. The problem is not one mark on it. Any ideas?

Looks like a foreign import model 1840 heavy cavalry sword. The blade looks robust with a flat spine. The grip looks like a wood core wrapped with cord and covered with leather, then wrapped with wire; a typical German style grip. The area where the knuckle bow connects to the pommel might narrow down the maker. If that spot on the ricasso is part of a maker's stamp it may also help narrow it down. It looks like an original Civil War period saber to me.
