Hello, I'm new to the forum. We have some family up in North Carolina cleaning out an old barn and my wife and i were gifted her grandaddys old sword.. its not in the best shape having lived the last 20+ years in the barn.

I have been able to narrow it down to an 1853 style cavalry sword but I cannot tell if its fake or real and need some advice on it.

I don't know what it is called in British style swords but in Japanese its called a koiguchi, the mouth piece of the scabbard is is jammed stuck on the blade.

I'm afraid to cause any damage to try to remove it but I also know if there were any markings they would often be there. The blade measures almost exactly 35.5 inches and the the handle appears to be leather and the leather of the strap appears to be very old.. I just cant tell if its 170 years old or a 50 year old replica.. any thoughts or ideas on how to remove the mouth piece of the scabbard form the blade. And or thoughts on its authenticity?

thanks in advance!

The grip is held on in a very unusual way for a US saber from the 19th century. Don't clean it up, though, and lets see if anyone else chimes in with more knowledge than I have...I tend to collect older pre-Civil War and Revolutionary war swords.

from what I read they were imported by the confederates from the British and mostly made in the UK and maybe sometimes Germany

I didn't see any plates here is some close up of the belt hardware.. maybe a slight blueish hue to the leather or fabric.. I can't really tell what it is..I haven't seen any examples of the belts.View attachment 524462View attachment 524463View attachment 524464
Tarred canvass belt? No buckle?! Looks cool though. So many repros made and many have sat around on old barns or worse. Let us know if it is original or not.
Cheers! Thanks for sharing
