South Mountain.

Dr. Gene Schmiel lead the program for us at Antietam. He is the author of the above book Drew mentioned. It was a FINE day to say the least and Gene gave details that I had wondered about for quite a while about the cornfield attacks.

I also had a good day on South Mountain, and had lunch at Bonnys. Saw General Reno's monument, and the Gate to Crampton's gap. The Battle for South Mountain to me gets very little attention. Just 2 great days for sure.

Outstanding. I may get to go for a coupla weekdays in mid-July next year.

Well the Fabulous Five are going to Antietam/South Mountain for a 2 look.
I have been putting of this trip for a while (HOT) so if the weather holds,
and the creeks don't rise, we will be there on October 30-31.

Those interested feel free to jine us for this excursion.
9am both days at the NPS station.
Pick up a copy of Timothy Reese's book "Sealed with Their Lives". It covers the action at Crampton's Gap and Burkettsville very well. I used to relic hunt there before the State made it a Park.

The Pry House. General McClellan's headquarters.

From the Pry House, looking west. This is from McClellan's headquarters there by a few yards. The trees were not there in 1862 and they had full view of what would become the Antietam Battlefield.

Here is a more westerly view from the grounds of the Pry House. Yikes, it's not very clear, but this is what General McClellan could see of the ground. Everything, more or less.

Bummed I missed this, but Oct 30 and Oct 31 is tough with young kids - trick or treating, ballet classes for both, etc...

Plus I really wanted to spend my weekend raking leaves instead of learning more about South Mountain...lol. see definition of sarcasm

Pry House was a hospital. McClellan's HQ was at the Ecker House in the centre.
Well then I guess all the signs, the field leaders, the Doc. Gene that was leading us, all the books about Antietam are wrong.
It was McClellan's Headquarters and also a HOSPITAL!! The hill behind the Pry House was also used for a signal station.
It is a little hard for me to not get a angry over your statement and tell you to butt out but I can't do that. But I will ask that if you join in please be accurate and keep your personal attacks to yourself, please!! I realize McClellan is your favorite of all times and I respect your knowledge but others have as much or more than you.

Hope I don't get fired from this thread! :frown:

True. Not much for the leaf raking any more. Raising children is time consuming I know. There will probably be another visit in the spring. I wanted to take more pictures of the farms which I really didn't do this time.
